Diary Of A Neurodivergent Buddhist

Welcome to a personal invitation of my journey, sharing the blending of lived experiences with echolocation and Buddhism. This led me to discover sound, space, and perception as a uniquely neurodivergent path in Buddhism that I hope, can help others too.

Neon Painted Face

This section invites readers into a Buddhist path seen through the vibrant, nonlinear, and richly textured lens of neurodivergence, specifically through lived experiences of ADHD, Autism, and Synaesthesia.

Chapter 1: The Unusual Mind is a Beautiful Mind

Neurodivergent minds are not disorders to be fixed but evolving, dynamic lenses that reveal the fluid, luminous nature of consciousness as taught in the Zhentong view of Buddhism.

Chapter 2: Meeting Buddhism Differently – A New Way In

Through the sensory-rich, nonlinear, and intuitive strengths of neurodivergent experience, Buddhism becomes an accessible and validating path that honors direct experience over rigid doctrine.

Chapter 3: Meditation and the Neurodivergent Bodymind

Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting still and being silent. Instead, it can flow with your sensory rhythms, attention patterns, and energetic landscape.

Chapter 4: Challenges to a Traditionally Orally Taught Environment

From oral teachings to silent retreats, traditional Buddhist formats can be unintentionally exclusionary; this chapter explores adaptive strategies and personal stories for practicing authentically as ADHD, Autistic, or AuDHD practitioners.

Buddhist Monk

This section explores how perception itself, particularly when shaped by neurodivergent sensory experiences, can become the foundation of meditative insight.

Chapter 5: Seeing with the Whole Body – Meditation for the Neurodivergent Bodymind

By adapting shamatha and vipashyana to include sensory variation, non-linear attention, and grounding strategies, meditation becomes a whole-body experience that welcomes the realities of neurodivergent perception.

Chapter 6: Designing Your Own Practice for a Neurodivergent Path

This chapter empowers readers to craft a meditation style that works for them; integrating movement, sound, visualization, and stimming, all while letting go of neurotypical ideals and reclaiming sensory joy.

Chapter 7: Echolocation Meditation – An Introduction

Rooted in personal exploration, echolocation meditation uses sound as both a perceptual and insight tool, inviting practitioners into a 360° field of awareness that reorients the senses as allies in awakening.

This section delves into echolocation as a contemplative practice and philosophical lens; where sound, space, and awareness converge into a living expression of the Dharma.

Chapter 8: A Glimpse of Timeless Awareness

Through the lens of echolocation, core Buddhist teachings like the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path come alive as sensory truths; where sound becomes a gateway into energetic balance, inner space, and the subtle boundary between suffering and liberation.

Chapter 9: Listening for What’s Real – Echolocation and the Zhentong View

By attuning to how echolocation reveals presence through absence, this chapter bridges auditory perception with the Zhentong view, showing how space itself hums with intrinsic awareness.

Chapter 10: Space, Emptiness and Awareness

Emptiness is not a blank void but a radiant spaciousness deeply resonant with the sensory-seeking, boundary-sensitive experience of many neurodivergent people, and echolocation offers a direct practice for resting in that luminous awareness.

This practical section offers step-by-step echolocation-based meditative techniques, interwoven with personal accounts, and mapped onto the three levels of phenomena as described in Buddhist epistemology: the manifest, the inferred, and the very obscure.

Chapter 11: Hearing the Practical – Manifest Phenomena (mngon gyur)

Learn to perceive sound and echo directly through auditory and spatial awareness, developing foundational echolocation skills that train the mind to experience the world with clarity and presence.

Chapter 12: Hearing the Inferred – Slightly Obscure Phenomena (lkog gyur)

By tuning into changes in sound signature; like density, surface, and texture. Intermediate echolocation practices reveal how subtle reasoning and perception interact to sense what cannot be seen.

Chapter 13: Hearing the Invisible – Very Obscure Phenomena (shin tu lkog gyur)

Advanced echolocation meditation leads beyond logic or direct perception into a contemplative resonance with emptiness itself; where the boundaries between sound, self, and space dissolve into luminous awareness.

Prayer

This final section opens new frontiers in echolocation meditation, offering diverse ways to engage with sound; through movement, vision, environment, emotion, and even mandala creation.

Chapter 14: Echolocation with Vision

Exploring how echolocation and sight can complement each other, this chapter addresses the challenges and rewards of integrating auditory and visual perception into a single, coherent awareness.

Chapter 15: Meditation Through Everyday Motion

Using natural body rhythms; like walking, cane tapping, or heel strikes; this practice brings echolocation into daily life, where moving sound becomes a subtle and constant guide for mindfulness.

Chapter 16: Free the Sound, Free the Echo – Using Sounds and Echoes Other Than Your Own

This chapter expands the practice beyond self-generated sound, teaching how to attune to repeatable environmental echoes and the emotional resonance embedded within them.

Chapter 17: Experiencing Omniscience

Through deepening echolocation awareness, practitioners cultivate three dimensions of omniscient mind: direct knowing of objects, spacious environmental clarity, and interdependent awareness of self and others.

Chapter 18: Echolocation Mandalas

A creative synthesis of sound, space, and sacred geometry, this chapter guides the reader in constructing mandalas of awareness—where every echo becomes a brushstroke of awakened perception.

Chapter 19: A Mind That Moves Differently – Final Reflections for the Neurodivergent Path

A heartfelt conclusion that reframes the entire journey as a uniquely neurodivergent path of wisdom, offering encouragement, gentle guidance for personal experimentation, and a closing blessing to honour the beauty of minds that move differently.
